Fact check

No plague cases have been found in Surgut or Khanty-Mansiysk

Published 8 Oct 2026 · Part of the event thread Suspected plague death at the Irkutsk anti-plague institute, and the rumours that followed

The facts

The Rospotrebnadzor office for Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug–Yugra said on October 7, 2026 that no plague cases had been recorded in Surgut or Khanty-Mansiysk.

The claim

Social media posts shared a lab form from Surgut and said a migrant worker had pneumonic plague.

Why it doesn’t hold up

The form reports IgG antibodies to the F1 antigen of Yersinia pestis. IgG antibodies indicate past exposure or vaccination, not a current infection, and they cannot show pneumonic plague. Diagnosis requires isolating the bacterium, a positive PCR test, or a rise in antibody levels between two samples. The posts came from an anonymous submission, and the illustration on the second post appears composited.

Bottom line

There is no evidence of plague in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. Check official sources before sharing health claims.
